Elm Grove
Double Reception renovation
London
Originally configured as a split-level double reception room within a Victorian terrace, this space had become an underused front sitting room and an unloved, awkward space to the rear that was simply serving as a passageway to the kitchen. Neither area had a clear sense of purpose and the family found themselves living solely in the kitchen.
Listening carefully to the clients, we discussed their desire for more sociable, functional spaces that would better support family life. Our suggestion was to reinstate the original dividing wall, creating two distinct rooms with distinct purposes.
The front room was transformed into a light-filled home office, featuring elegant wall panelling and a statement desk positioned within the bay window to maximise natural light. Designed with flexibility in mind, the room also serves as a calm and inviting living room, with layered lighting and comfortable seating that allow it to transition effortlessly from work to relaxation.
To the rear, what was once a corridor became a cosy TV room with direct access from the kitchen. Wrapped in rich blue linen-textured wallpaper, bespoke joinery and atmospheric lighting, the space offers a warm and intimate retreat for everyday family living.
A palette of warm blues, olive greens and soft creamy neutrals, combined with a shared emphasis on texture and tactility, unifies the design direction of the two spaces whilst allowing each their own individual character.
